Heavy smoke at a popular Mahopac restaurant prompted a quick fire department response early Sunday morning, allowing the eatery to open as planned for Father's Day.

Just before 4:30 a.m., the Mahopac Falls Fire Department and a unit from Carmel Police were dispatched to the Holy Smoke restaurant on Route 6N for a commercial fire alarm, according to Jack Casey of the MFFD.

First arriving units found the area covered in a haze that brought calls for re-dispatch for a possible structure fire and more manpower.

Chief Brian Sacher assumed Incident Command and Asst. Chief Jeff Boyle took control of Operations.

Forcible entry was required to get access to the interior, where there was a heavy smoke condition coming from the basement, filling the structure and causing high CO levels on the first floor, Casey said.

The smoke was caused by an exhaust fan drawing smoke in from the smoker, according to Chris Casino, owner of Holy Smoke.

Smoke ejectors were set up in doorways, front and rear, removing the smoke quickly and bringing CO levels to a safe range.
